A Romanian court has ordered internet personality and self-proclaimed misogynist Andrew Tate under house arrest as part of an investigation into human trafficking and sexual exploitation, his representative said.
The big picture: The former professional kickboxer and his brother Tristan were among six people detained in the first 24 hours after Romania’s organized crime prosecution unit, DIICOT, carried out four house searches.
DIICOT asked the Bucharest court to arrest the Tate brothers for 30 days, but the judge placed Tate under house arrest and his brother under judicial supervision during this period.
The key quote: “The Tates welcome the decision and strongly deny all allegations against them, emphasizing that the accusations are baseless and without substantial evidence,” their representative Mateea Petrescu wrote in a statement.
What else to know: Tate was indicted in mid-2023 along with his brother and two Romanian female suspects for human trafficking, rape and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women – allegations they have denied.
Tate gained millions of fans by promoting an ultra-masculine lifestyle that critics say denigrates women.
