To some motorists on the busy Princes Highway in the Engadine, it appeared to be an ordinary accident, with two cars colliding on Sunday morning.
That witness, Andrew, was among those who quickly ran to help – only to discover it was a different situation.
“He just came flying down the road. And then he ended up on the wrong side of the road, went through the traffic lights and as he was going through the lights, he got T-boned. And then when he got t-boned, he went out and tried to hit his partner The police came here and he managed to massacre a few other people and another policeman and that too.
Superintendent Donald Faulds of Sutherland Shire Police Command said the driver was quickly arrested.
“As community members were helping one of the women out of a vehicle, the man got out of the vehicle. He was armed with what we believe to be a box cutter, and the woman had clearly suffered some degree of number of injuries during an altercation inside this vehicle… This man was engaged by the police. A short foot chase took place and this person was taken into custody.
Paul Tonge from NSW Ambulance says emergency services arrived at a distressing scene.
He says the woman, a passerby and a police officer were all injured, apparently with a knife.
“We treated and evaluated six patients, two of whom were injured in the car accident described previously. Four of them had suffered stab wounds. One patient had minor injuries to his arms and neck and was taken to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition, who is now believed to be in a serious but stable condition.”
The man accused of the stabbing rampage and the female passenger are also both in serious condition in hospital.
The superintendent says they know each other.
“What I can say about the two occupants of the car where the woman was stabbed and the driver inflicted a number of self-inflicted injuries is that they were in a domestic relationship. Again, it There is no history of violence that we know of between the two, but certainly related to domestic life.
Donald Faulds recognized the “incredible work” and courage of those who responded as events unfolded.
One of these passers-by says that everyone is still in shock from the turn of events.
“I was there. I was there. My partner and I tried to hold the guy back. He pulled out a knife. What am I going to do? I won’t take a knife for anyone ‘one you know, the other guy who tried to help the lady, protect her – he got stabbed, so it’s not good.
