Australia Joins the US Express Entry Program: What It Means for Travelers

Some Australian travelers will be able to apply for expedited access with US Customs and Immigration from January next year.
The Global Entry program gives pre-approved travelers faster access through immigration and customs channels at major U.S. airports.

Global Entry holders will also have access to the Transportation Security Administration’s Pre-Check Program, which allows for expedited screening processes for U.S. domestic flights.

Joining the Global Entry program is a mark of the closeness and strength of relations between our two countries,” said Foreign Minister Penny Wong.

Citizens of 15 countries, including the United Kingdom, Singapore and South Korea, already have access to the Global Entry program.

Who can apply?

Foreign Minister Penny Wong announced on Tuesday that a limited number of Australians who travel most frequently to the United States will be able to apply in January 2025.

According to the Australian Financial Review, around 1,000 Australians who have traveled to the United States at least 5 times in the past 12 months will benefit from a fast-track procedure.

An unlimited number of fast-track entries will be granted under the second phase of the program, which first requires Australia’s federal parliament to pass legislation.

Applicants must undergo a rigorous background check and an in-person interview.

How much will it cost?

The US Homeland Security website lists the Global Entry program at US$100 ($153) and the TSA Pre-check program at US$77.95 ($119.25).
